How to plan a movie night with friends

Updated 20 October 2026

To plan a movie night with friends, settle three things in this order: when, where and which film. Fix the date first, because it decides who can come; then the place and the screen; then let everyone suggest films and vote, and ask who is coming a couple of days before.

We make Nocturna, an app for exactly this: a shared pool of films for your group, a poll for each night and RSVPs. Everything below works without it too.

What do you need for a movie night?

How far ahead should you plan it?

For a group of four to eight people, one to two weeks ahead is enough. The easiest trick is a fixed slot, such as the first Friday of the month: nobody has to agree on a date again, and people keep it free.

What is the step-by-step timeline?

  1. 10 days before: pick the date and the place, and tell the group.
  2. All week: everyone adds films they would like to watch to one shared list, with a line on why.
  3. 5 days before: make a shortlist of three to six films from that list and open a poll.
  4. 2 days before: close the poll, announce the film, and ask everyone to say if they are coming, maybe, or out.
  5. 1 day before: check the film is available and that the screen, the sound and the subtitles work.
  6. 1 hour before: set up, dim the lights, start the film on time.
  7. After: mark the film as watched, so it leaves the list and nobody suggests it again next month.

How do you choose the film?

Use a short poll where everyone ticks every film they would happily watch (approval voting), and the film with the most ticks wins. It is quicker and fairer than one vote each. The full method, with a worked example, is in How to pick a movie as a group.

How many people is right?

Four to ten people works best. Under four, it is a night in rather than an event; over ten, the seats, the sightlines and the snack run all get harder, and so does finding a film nobody has seen.

Can you do it without an app?

Yes. A pinned note in the group chat can hold the list of films, the chat's built-in poll can run the vote, and a message the day before can collect RSVPs. What gets lost is the list: it scrolls away, so next month starts from zero.

Nocturna keeps that list as the group's pool, which lasts across nights, runs the poll with approval voting, collects RSVPs, and has a Tonight mode that shows the film, the time and who is coming on the big screen before you press play. It is free on the web at nocturna.mov.

Questions

How long does a movie night take?

Plan for about three hours: around two hours for the film and 30 to 45 minutes before it for people to arrive, settle and get snacks.

What time should a movie night start?

On a weeknight, start the film by 21:00 so it ends before 23:30; on a Friday or Saturday, 21:30 is a common start.

Do you need a projector for a movie night?

No. A TV is fine for up to about six people. A projector helps with bigger groups and makes the night feel special, and an entry-level one is enough for a dark room.

What if two films tie in the poll?

Let the host break the tie, or keep the runner-up at the top of the list for next time so it has a head start.
